ID Action supports National Disability Employment Awareness Month 

(Des Moines, IA) — October 12, 2017 — Iowans with disabilities are an important part of an innovative, inclusive workforce. To recognize this, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) selected “Inclusion Drives Innovation” as the theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month highlights the skills, experiences and contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce.

The current rate of Iowans with disabilities in the workforce is significantly lower than the rate at which Iowans without disabilities are working. In 2015, 50,180 Iowans age 18 to 64 with a disability were employed in a full-time status. Additionally, 55.1 percent of Iowans with a disability worked at least part-time. “Inclusion Drives Innovation” emphasizes the need to include workers with diverse experiences to create a stronger, more inclusive workforce.

"Americans of all abilities must have access to good, safe jobs," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. "Smart employers know that including different perspectives in problem-solving situations leads to better solutions. Hiring employees with diverse abilities strengthens their business, increases competition and drives innovation."

"ID Action is proud to support National Disability Employment Awareness Month," said Rik Shannon, public policy manager at the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council. "We know that a strong workforce is one that includes the skills and talents of all individuals, including those with disabilities."
