We’d Like to Introduce You to Our New Look!

old logo compared to new logo

Welcome to the new Iowans with Disabilities in Action. After 16 years, we decided it was time for a new look, so we took off on a rebranding journey to bring a fresh, new look to the organization and create a logo that better represents our mission.

Over the years, the focus of Iowans with Disabilities in Action has evolved. The new logo visually represents the mission of the organization: to move Iowans into action. The circular upward graphic represents the idea that the organization is supporting Iowans with disabilities to stand up and take action — from voting in elections to advocating for themselves and engaging in their communities.

We still plan to bring you the same helpful information, resources and support but with a new look, as you can see reflected in this Iowa Advocacy Connection issue. This also means our website, www.idaction.org, has a new look too. We hope this updated layout gives you a more pleasing experience across all of your devices. If you experience any issues or think we’re missing something, let us know here or by calling 866.432.2846.

IDDC Names New Executive Director

The Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council is happy to announce Brooke Lovelace Hundling will be joining the Council as executive director.

Lovelace comes to the Iowa DD Council from the Center for Disabilities and Development, Iowa’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, where she was a program coordinator of Iowa’s Money Follows the Person program.

“We are excited to welcome Brooke to the Iowa DD Council. She brings a wealth of knowledge in the area of disabilities program implementation,” said Steve Crew, chair of the Council. “Brooke’s leadership will further our Council’s effectiveness in the creation of innovative practices to provide greater community access for individuals with developmental disabilities. It will also help us continue to establish effective networks for collaboration.”

Upon her arrival to the Council, Lovelace looks to gain an understanding of the Council’s top priorities and help make progress on its five-year goals of advocacy and system change. “I believe now, more than ever, it is so important that people with disabilities and their families have the tools, resources and knowledge to successfully advocate and take action to create change so they can live the lives they want,” said Lovelace.

It’s Time to REV UP!

National Disability Voter Registration Week is coming up July 16-20. This is a national effort to make the DISABILITY VOTE more influential. This effort, known as the REV UP Campaign, has designated this week as National Disability Voter Registration Week in advance of the November elections. REV UP stands for Register! Educate! Vote! This is a big year for the Iowa elections. The November general election will determine our governor, executive officers, all four seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, 25 of our state Senators and all 100 of our state Representatives.

Get involved with the REV UP Campaign by hosting a disability voter registration drive in your community. We are here to help you. We will provide you with information, training and materials to help you prepare to register and educate as many people as you can. State Sweep

Iowans with Disabilities in Action is hitting the road and will visit all 99 counties in Iowa over the next two years. We will visit communities throughout Iowa to increase awareness of how we can support Iowans with disabilities and their allies to achieve their goals. Ultimately, we want to get to know you and you to get to know us.

We hope to make the most of each visit by talking with Iowans who are affected by disability, community organizations, partners, elected officials and members of the community.

More information about the State Sweep project will be posted on our website on July 23. We will start taking requests to schedule visits to communities at that time.
